Before itunes, there were CDs. Before CDs, there were Cassettes. Before Cassettes, there were Records. And through it all there has been one constant, (outside of the music itself), album art.
Now while time and technology have made many of the formats used to listen to music as antiquated as the notion of actually spending money to purchase music (crazy idea I know), album art is one element of the commercial music consumption experience that remains just as significant today as it was when the needle first kissed the record.
Similar to the artwork that graces the covers of famous pieces of literature, album art has a unique ability of establishing the tone of a creative enterprise before one even has the opportunity to consume it. Even more so than music videos, truly impactful album art captures the imagination and provides a visual marker that in some cases, even transcends the music itself.
It was in the pursuit of creating truly impactful works of art that designer and illustrator Richard Perez took his turn at re-designing the album art from a few of the most prominent albums of 2010. A masterclass in typography, take a look at how Perez re-covered what are sure to become new classics.
